Suffering from BPPV? We have the expertise you need!

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo,  a sudden sensation that the room is spinning, often triggered by changes in head position. Although the symptoms can be intense and unsettling, BPPV is a mechanical problem of the inner ear that typically responds well to physiotherapy.

At Kinoveo Physiotherapy Clinic, we offer targeted vestibular physiotherapy for individuals in Kanata and the Ottawa area, helping them resolve dizziness, restore stability, and safely return to normal life.

Understanding the Symptoms of BPPV

BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals (otoconia) in the inner ear become dislodged and migrate into the semicircular canals, where they disrupt normal balance signals. This can cause:

  • Brief episodes of spinning dizziness when turning in bed, looking up, or bending forward

  • Nausea or unsteadiness following sudden head movements

  • Loss of balance or difficulty walking, especially in the morning or at night

  • Anxiety or fear of movement due to dizziness

While each episode of vertigo may last less than a minute, it can be quite debilitating and the fear of triggering it can significantly impact confidence and mobility. According to the Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA), BPPV is responsible for nearly half of all vertigo cases in older adults.

Physiotherapy Can Help with BPPV

The good news? BPPV is highly treatable. At Kinoveo Physio, we use specific repositioning maneuvers,  such as the Epley maneuver, to guide the dislodged crystals back to their correct location in the inner ear.

Treatment may include:

  • Diagnostic testing, such as the Dix-Hallpike maneuver, to identify the affected canal

  • Repositioning techniques to resolve vertigo episodes quickly and safely

  • Balance retraining and habituation exercises to reduce residual dizziness if necessary

  • Education on managing symptoms without us!

In many cases, symptoms can improve after just one or two sessions. For people experiencing lingering imbalance or fear of movement, we offer guided vestibular rehab to support full recovery.

What to Expect at Kinoveo Physio

During your first appointment, we’ll take a detailed history of your symptoms and perform gentle tests to confirm a BPPV diagnosis. Our vestibular-trained physiotherapists will then walk you through repositioning maneuvers with care and precision.

If additional issues like neck stiffness, visual sensitivity, or post-concussion symptoms are present, we’ll tailor the plan to address these symptoms as well.
