Post-Operative

Common orthopedic surgeries include hip or knee joint replacement, bone fixations, muscle or tendon repairs, and ligament reconstruction. After undergoing orthopedic surgery, rehabilitation is necessary to help regain mobility, strength, and function. At our physiotherapy clinic, we guide many patients through their post-operative recovery and provide personalized treatment plans to help our patients recover and get back to their normal activities.

How can physiotherapy help with post-operative rehabilitation?

Physiotherapy plays a critical role in the recovery process after an orthopedic surgery. Treatment typically includes exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion, as well as hands-on manual therapy techniques to help reduce pain and improve mobility.

Your treatment may include:

  • Exercise programs: Our physiotherapists will design a customized exercise program to help you regain strength and flexibility. The exercise program may include a combination of stretching, strengthening, and functional exercises that target specific muscle groups and help restore your normal movement patterns. Our therapists also educate you on proper body mechanics and techniques to prevent further injuries.

  • Advice on the use of crutches/other gait aids: After surgery, your surgeon may instruct you to limit the amount of weight you can put on your legs while healing is occuring, or to not use your leg at all. This may mean that the use of crutches or another gait aid is required. Your physiotherapist will ensure that the gait aid is properly adjusted to your body, and teach you how to use it properly so that you don’t injure yourself further.

  • Manual therapy: Hands-on manual therapy techniques, such as massage, joint mobilization, and stretching, can help reduce your pain and stiffness, improve circulation, and increase mobility. Our physiotherapists use a variety of manual therapy techniques to help accelerate the healing process and promote optimal recovery

  • Pain management: After orthopedic surgery, pain is a common symptom that can affect your ability to participate in therapy. Our physiotherapists use a variety of techniques to manage pain, including hot and cold therapy, TENS, and acupuncture.

  • Balance and coordination exercises: After an orthopedic surgery, you may experience difficulty with balance and coordination, which can increase the risk of falls and further injury. Our physiotherapists use specific exercises to help patients improve your balance and coordination, which can help prevent further injuries.
